MS, colds and flu

December 4, 2023 | Pippa Vincent-Cooke

MS is often referred to as an auto-immune condition. People with MS may wonder if their immune system is compromised, and therefore if they are particularly susceptible to cold and flu.

National charity MS-UK have written an interesting blog post on this subject.  The immune system is not necessarily weakened with MS, meaning the ability to fight off viruses is usually not affected. There are caveats though, such as when taking a disease modifying therapy which works by suppressing the immune system, whilst undergoing HSCT treatment and also being affected by other conditions that leave us immunocompromised.

As a reminder, please do not come to the Centre if you are feeling unwell and/or have cold or flu symptoms so we can minimise the risk of spreading illness. Thank you.
