A brand new class at the Berkshire MS Therapy Centre
We are launching our brand new ‘Don’t Forget Your Feet’ physiotherapy class aimed at improving the sensation, proprioception, flexibility and strength of your feet and ankles. It will be a mixture of sensory exercises, flexibility and strengthening exercises.
Did you know? The foot has 26 bones, 33 joints as well as many sensory receptors in the skin, muscles, tendons and joints to help with movement, balance and shock absorption.
Balance problems are common in MS for various reasons including poor proprioception. This term refers to the body’s ability to determine its position in space without using the vision. Imagine closing your eyes and touching your nose with your finger – this movement is using your proprioceptive system. Proprioceptive information from your ankles is important sensory feedback used to maintain your balance.
This 8 week course will be run over Zoom with each session lasting 45 minutes.
The class may help with:
- Strength
- Improved sensation and proprioception
- Flexibility
- Balance and walking
It is free to attend but any donations will be greatly appreciated www.bmstc.org/donation
Class details
The class will take place on a Wednesday between 10am and 10.45am over Zoom. The first class will be Wednesday 24 June 2020 and it will run until Wednesday 12 August 2020
Is this class suitable for me?
The class is open for people who do not use a walking aid or use a walking aid for some of the day. You need to have some movement in your feet and ankles. You will also need to be able to place either leg on top of the other and reach your foot with your hands. You will need some strength in both your hands to manipulate your foot. You will also need to do the class in bare feet.
About this class
The class is led by our senior physiotherapist Henriette.
What do I need to join?
To join the class, you will need a smartphone or computer with:
- speakers
- a microphone
- a camera
You will also need a chair
As we are doing the class via Zoom, all participants will receive a small exercise ball on loan in the post. Not having access to various pieces of equipment in the gym means we will have to be a bit creative with what we have in the house.
Prepare a bag or box with little goodies to help with the exercises eg a brush (old washing up brush or nail brush), Velcro, old empty roll on deodorant, a shoe box with uncooked pasta/rice or sand, a pencil, cotton ball, paperclips or another pointy object, a sponge, hot and cold objects (eg put an object in the freezer for a little while). Let your imagination run wild to challenge your sensation.
