Do you need a new electricity meter?

February 18, 2026 | Pippa Vincent-Cooke

Signals which help some older electricity meters (known as Radio Teleswitch or RTS meters) switch between peak and off‑peak rates are due to be be switched off soon. It’s being done in phases and once it happens, heating or hot water at impacted properties may stop working properly or run at the wrong times.

How to spot if you have an RTS meter:

  • A separate labelled switch box near your meter
  • Electric heating or storage heaters at your property
  • No gas supply in your area (common in rural locations)
  • Cheaper energy at certain times (tariffs like Economy 7, Economy 10 or Total Heat Total Control)

If you think you have an Radio Teleswitch meter, or you’re unsure, contact your electricity supplier to arrange a smart meter upgrade. Smart meters are the only technical replacement and can deliver similar off‑peak benefits, with accurate bills and usage tracking.
