The physiotherapy team recently had an interesting talk from the Regional Driving Assessment Centre and they thought the information would be useful to some of our members.
The RDAC was set up as a charity in 2007 to support the continuation of mobility services linked to driving accessibility. Their aim is to provide assessments for people with medical conditions or disabilities to help them regain or maintain their independence in driving and outdoor mobilityThey currently have 8 centres offering a range of services and support, working closely with other mobility centres in the Driving Mobility network.
RDAC provides a variety of services including driving appraisals, driving assessments, driving accessibility assessments (including getting in and out of the car and loading mobility equipment) following which they can provide advice and recommendations for car adaptations. At their centre there is also the opportunity to try some of the adaptations. You can self-refer to the centre or be referred by a healthcare professional (if you ask the physio team, they would be happy to help). The current cost for an assessment if you self-referral is £150 or £40 if you are referred by a health care professional.
The closest Centre to BMSTC is in Oxford. The Driving Mobility network details other similar services in different locations.
