MS Awareness Week – Telling my parents

April 28, 2025 | Pippa Vincent-Cooke

Telling my parents about the diagnosis was quite hard to do. I knew they wouldn’t be upset with me, but because I knew they’d be upset for me. I didn’t want them to worry.

I remember sitting at at their home and explaining that I’d had more investigations into why I’d suddenly had a problem with the vision in one eye, and told them that it turned out I had MS. To be fair, both my parents took it in their stride. They only had one question, and that was to ask me how it would affect me in the future. I said I couldn’t answer that, as none of us know, but with the medications available now alongside physio and other therapies I hoped I would continue to lead a full and normal life.

They both went quiet as the three of us mulled it over, as we all knew that there were no guarantees but I know that they’ll be there to support me in the future if and when I need it.

Thank you to our member for sharing this story as part of MS Awareness Week, which this year has the theme of #MS Conversations.
